Abstract
This experiment was carried out to define the possible acclimatization of wild orchids as floricultural crops from May 1978 to June 1979. Jeju Do and sourthern and western part of the coastal island of Korea were surveyed from the ecological point of view including flowering time, distribution, altitude and light condition. The surveyed wild orchids were grouped as floricultural use and their propagation methods were studied.
Surveyed thirty species could be classified into four groups as 17 species of potting, 2 species of cutting, 4 species of ground cover and 7 species of terrarium. Most of the wild orchids bloomed in May and July and were distributed over the sea level of 200m to 600m. Except 5 species which are distributed in full sunlight, all the investigated native orchids grow in the shade place at about 8,000 lux which is below the 15% of the full sunlight.
The seeds of Gastrodia elata showed increased percentage: 12.8%, when the seeds are treated with 10% KOH solution and imbibed in 1 ppm GA added KC medium. However, the protocorms of G. elata did not show any chlorophyll formation. Callus typic mass which is developed from the white protocorm was observed.
Maximum rhizome growth in Cymbidium kanran was produced in NAA 5 ppm and BK 0.5 ppm added to the basal culture media. Same results were obtained in the number of tillers and death percentage of rhizome. However, obvious trend according to the various combinations of the two growth regulators did not observed. Growth and spreading direction of rhizomes were noticeably affected by the solidity of agar medium. Eight gram per liter agar medium showed better growth and more number of tillers than 14g/§¤ agar. Downward growing from the agar medium surface was also observed in the medium showing good growth.
